Two years ago my sister and brother-in-law’s baby died at birth. We know something of the pain and sorrow they experienced, though, thank God, the grief became more bearable with time. I pray that, even in death’s dark vale, you and your wife will know God’s love and comfort.

Rob, I think I can feel some of your pain. I lost a sister who had a congenital defect. Her name was also Esther. Heaven is sweeter because we have loved ones there. May you feel the comfort from our God of comfort.
A number of years ago I wrote a poem about my sister:
My Sister

My sister’s name was Esther Ruth.
She left before I knew her.
One day she spent upon this earth,
Eternity in heaven.
I often thought of Esther Ruth,
And shen I’d get to see her.
Would she still be a baby?
Or grown, a special woman?
The time arrived when I became
A father, but in waiting,
We chose some names,
Two sets for girls–
We couldn’t decide between them.
And then our baby dear was born,
But two, not one, it was.
The names were ready, easy now,
Two sets for two sweet girls
I’ve had no other sister
But the one who lives in heaven.
But when my daughters came
They filled the space
My sister had given.
Her names live on in nieces now,
Daughters that I’m proud of,
ESTHER Marie and Karen RUTH,
Their namesake up in heaven.
Some day I’ll see my sister,
I hope she loves me too,
For I have missed her all my life,
And love, though never knew her.
I know she’ll love her namesakes, too,
They talk, I’m sure they will,
Each telling how God’s been so good,
A day for one on earth–
For two, they lived for heaven.
