Digitisation of the General Baptist Magazine
“The General Baptist Magazine started in 1798 as a speculation of Dan Taylor; when he could not afford to carry it on, the New Connexion in 1802 asked his brother Adam to edit the G.B. Repository; with 1822 the title was enlarged to say that it was also the Missionary Observer. With minor changes of title, and variations of frequency, this continued till 1891. The amalgamation of that year merged it then into the Baptist Union Magazine, which in 1896 was re-named the Church and Household, and soon flickered out.” — “Baptist Periodicals,” Transactions of the Baptist Historical Society 5.3 (April 1917): 193-194.[1]
The print quality, especially of the earliest volumes in this series, does not make for easy reading. In many places the text has faded or become obscured by foxing. Pagination in the early volumes can also be somewhat random.
35 volumes of the General Baptist Magazine are now available for free download here. This is possibly the most extensive collection currently available online and represents all the volumes that I can access in Spurgeon’s College Library and The Evangelical Library. This series seems to be extremely rare and what few copies there are for sale are quite expensive. Nonetheless, I will continue to search for the missing issues between 1801 and 1853. Any assistance that can be offered in this search would be greatly appreciated.
