Why Book Aid?
 |
|
A desperate plea for help came from Christian
booksellers in "Book Famine" areas, where economic crises and foreign currency
restrictions had reduced supplies of Christian books (and, indeed, books in
general) to an all time low. Their cry: "Won't somebody do something to help
us?" was hard to ignore. |
What is Book Aid Doing?
Large shipments of new and second-hand Christian books and
Bibles are being sent to these needy areas - concentrating mainly on Africa,
Asia and the Caribbean, with smaller shipments being sent to many other
places.
 |
-
By receiving new and used Christian books and
Bibles through nationwide collecting points.
-
By sorting and shipping those that are suitable
to overseas Christian bookshops where a structure has been set up for their
wide distribution at affordable prices.
-
By encouraging the use of funds thus generated in
these countries so that local literature initiatives will increase and
develop.
|
Is that all?
 |
|
No, it is only the beginning. Book Aid's first aid
injection of large shipments of books is not the answer to each country's
plight by any means - but it is a start. The second phase of the programme is
to encourage and support local writers, publishers and distributors in any way
we can.
Book Aid is dedicated to making Christian
literature with a bias to the poor a reality. |
|
Since commencement of the programme in 1988 over
Twenty Million Christian books and Bibles have been shipped to
Book-hungry areas, thanks to the generosity of British Christians and
publishers who have given books to help the overseas church in a time of need.
|
 |
 |
|
Books considered unsuitable to send are sold in our
secondhand bookshops to help cover administration and shipping costs. |
